Top Ten Thursday - Movie Review

Top Ten Thursday is back - hooray I hear you say. The challenge is hosted by Tamara at Confessions of a part-time working mom and this week we had a list of movies to choose one from to pick our top ten scenes for good or bad reasons. The list of movies was:
  • Rainman
  • The Wedding Planner
  • Pretty Woman
  • Ocean's Eleven
  • When Harry met Sally
  • Sleepless in Seattle
  • Analyse this/that
  • Forrest Gump
  • Breakfast at Tiffany's
  • Any James Bond starring Sean Connery
I love so many of these films so found it difficult to pin it down to one so had to use my trusty method of choosing - if I was on a desert island and could only take one of these movies with me, which one would it be? Sleepless in Seattle is the winner of that debate as it always leaves me feeling really warm and happy.

Even though I could probably recite the whole script, I watched the film again (any excuse) and came up with the following list of scenes/things that I adore about this film.

1. The phone call that Jonah makes to Dr Marsha where he says his dad needs a new wife. It sets the tone of the whole film, as it's full of pathos but also makes us laugh. Women sitting in movie theatres all over the world fell in love with Sam as he describes how wonderful his wife was and how when he first met her he knew. "It was like coming home, only to no home I'd ever known. I was just taking her hand to help her out of a cab. And it was like... magic"

2. The soundtrack for the film - I know it's technically not a scene by itself, but so many of the scenes wouldn't have been as funny, sad, or just wonderful without the perfect songs accompanying them. A perfect example is when Sam decides to ring Victoria to ask her out and the song for this scene is Gene Autrey's Back in the Saddle again - perfection.

3. The sex discussion between Sam and Jonah. Jonah asks his dad if when he gets a wife and has sex with her, will she scratch your back up? This discussion takes place whilst they're brushing their teeth and is just a little gem in the middle of all the other gems.

4. Rosie O'Donnell as Becky, Annie's colleague. The expressions on Becky's face in so many different scene's is what brings so much of the humour out.

5.The Tiramisu discussion between Sam and his friend Jay. Jay mentions Tiramisu and Sam thinks it's something that some woman will want him to do to them. Watching the film now it seems bizarre that at one time not everyone knew what Tiramisu was, but then remembering that this film was released 24 years ago. Interesting trivia fact, Jay is played by Rob reiner who directed Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally and Nora Ephron was one of the writers. Sleepless in Seattle is directed by Nora Ephron and Rob Reiner acts in it.

6. Becky and Annie watching an Affair to Remember. I love this scene as it reminds me of watching films with friends in the past and how emotional we've gotten.

7. When Sam first sees Annie at the airport and is captivated by her appearance. I think it's one of those moments in the film where the romantics amongst us so wanted someone to look at us like that. My beloved tells me that the first time he saw me he knew he wanted to get to know me better, which is so romantic (how did I get so lucky?).

8. I love Bill Pullman as an actor and he's in a couple of my guilty pleasure films, While You Were Sleeping and Independance Day. In this film he is the butt of the joke - Walter, the perfectly safe, sensible fiance that Annie thinks she needs until her world is turned upside down by listening to Sam on the radio.

9. An Affair to Remember vs The Dirty Dozen. This is the scene where Susy (Rita Wilson's character) describes An Affair to Remember and ends up in tears with the men looking on. They then talk about The Dirty Dozen and pretend they're in tears about the end of that film.

10. The final scene where Sam and Jonah finally meet Annie on top of the Empire State Building. Few words are spoken and yet you know that they are instantly in love, will get married, and have the most wonderfully perfect life together. Another interesting fact, considering the film is about Sam and Annie, they actually only spend about two minutes on screen together.

I've only just watched the film and I already want to watch it again. Have you seen Sleepless in Seattle? If not, your life is not complete and you must get it and watch it now!!! Come on, you know it makes sense - a guaranteed feel good film that will warm your heart.

Before you go, why don't you pop over to Tamara's blog, Confessions of a part-time working mom, and see what film my fellow bloggers decided to review - click HERE to visit.

Until next time, be good, stay safe, and treat yourself by watching a film you love this week.

  1. Rosie O'Donnell is so good in this movie, #6, 7, 9, 10 is on my list too! of course, since we're talking about the same movie but people have different tastes, 10 minutes is a quite a short time to know someone but you just know these two belong together...

the song 'a wink and a smile' always makes me think of this movie, such a good song.

it's nice reviewing this movie with you, have a lovely day.
