Top Ten Thursday - Oddities of Life

For this week's top ten Tamara from Part-time Working Hockey Mom has asked us to put together the top ten curiosities / oddnesses / scurrilities we've come across lately: news, stories, items, people, signs...

Here's my list:

1. Last week in Scotland we had some very cold weather, and whilst we didn't have the snow that some people had, we did have icy wind, and lots of snow/sleet showers. In the middle of all this there were still strange people out on the golf course hitting a little white ball around. This is the view out our window showing some of these weirdos.

2. This one is a little bit related to weather as well. The last few days when my beloved has been dropping me off at work we have driven past a man who looks quite unwell, sitting in a wheelchair, rugged up against the elements, and smoking. No matter what the weather has been like he is there, and Ken commented that the Editors have a song about this called Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors. The line in the song is actually very apt - "the saddest thing that I'd ever seen were smokers outside the hospital doors".

3. The curiosity of skulls with various accessories - can you picture one of these on display in your home?

4. This is the sarcophagus of Sir Richard De Moravia who died in the 13th century in the battle of Embo. What makes this an oddity is how Sir Richard killed the Danish leader - he did it with the leg of a horse!!!

5. What is going on with this front yard  - do you think they're someone who has always wanted to live on a farm but then couldn't afford it or found out they were allergic to real animals.

6. This tree has made it onto the list because Ken and I think it looks like a baboon's bottom (yes, we know we're a little immature, but you wouldn't want us any other way).

7. The Scottish love their Haggis (thankfully there is a vegetarian version) and we came across this in the supermarket recently - Scotland Cuisine meets Indian. I bet it's really yummy.

8. One of the cafes we went to recently had this map of the world on the wall - in case you didn't realise, it's upside down, so Tasmania is nearly at the top of the world.

9. On one of our wanders we found this partially built eco green house. It's extremely eco friendly as it is using up used plastic bottles that are threaded on bamboo poles. We'll have to go back soon and see the finished product. I love how ingenious people can be in their ways of helping this little planet we're all residing on.

10. I'm going to cheat slightly for this one, but space needs to be left for all the crazily odd things the two of us do on a regular basis that we can't possibly share here. The latest, which made me laugh a lot, was Ken producing a tampon with his change when he went to pay at the supermarket, earning him an odd look from the lady on the checkout.

Do you take note of the oddities you see in life? Before you go, make sure you hop over to Tamara's Blog to see what my fellow bloggers have come up with.

Until next time, be good, stay safe, and be curious and odd this week.

  1. #5 - maybe that guy really like animals but he's allergic to live animals?

#10 - I think that's more embarrassing than odd but then again, I think anything that makes people laugh deserves a mention.

    have a lovely day.

  2. Your #2 reminds me of when we were passengers, and there was this fat, ugly guy I had noticed during boarding. He started coughing like a SOB. After a while the flight attendands asked for a doctor. Nobody came forward. They asked for a nurse. Nobody came forward. They got really desperate "we think this gentlman is having an MI, is there ANYONE with ANY MEDICAL EXPERIENCE? A physician assitant came to the rescue. The passenger was stabilized and put into first class, then he was escorted out by a special care team of the arrival airport. As he was wheeled out on a wheel chair he said "sorry to hold you folks up. I'm good, this isn't my first heart attack. Now where is the smoker's lounge?"

  3. Great greenhouse, you definitely need to go back. Also have lots of coffee at the "Tasmania is on top of the world" place!
You did a fantastic job scouting the world for bizzare things :-)

  4. Hi Pam - I gather it's freezing cold, or has been. The odds and ends are fun .. though what the tampon was used for befuddles me ... I know in the Rhodesian war they were used to block wounds ... it is warming up though - enjoy the weekend and seeing the bottle shed completed ... cheers Hilary

  5. I love your sense of humor. We all need a sense of humor and we need to laugh about something every single day.

I hope your weather warms up soon. Sounds downright freezing.

The smoker at the hospital door. What a shame.

Have a fabulous day and weekend. ♥

  7. 1. So much white stuff here that you'd need a beach ball to see it.
    3. Just finished a book about serial killer Belle Gunness. So that's where the skulls went.
    5. Maybe I should quit complaining about my neighbors, lol.
    8. So the world is not only flat, it is upside down.
    10. Lol. Sex reassignment?

    Very cute.
