M is for Mojacar (a Spanish escape)

M is for Mojacar (pronounced Mahaca) in southern Spain, which is where we were last week for a short but lovely break.  We were very lucky in that we had somewhere to stay as our friends Elaine and Paul live there in a lovely villa.

We flew into Alicante which is a 2.5 hour drive away so hired a car for the 5 days we were there.  As you can see from the below picture, when Ken first got into the car he forgot that we were in a country where they drive on the opposite side of the road to us.

Our friends have got four lovely dogs, Sam and Bombo who we already knew, and the new additions to the family, Banjo and Milo (note the good Aussie names) who are both chihuahuas.

On one of our mornings we went for breakfast at cafe Blu - great food and a really lovely latte.  We thought the sign outside was very funny - I'm thinking because it's written in English then the creepy person must be one of the many expats that live in the area.

Mojacar has two parts, the village in the mountains (Mojacar Pueblo), and the beach resort (Mojacar Playa).  The town in the hills is beautiful with white villas and lots of flowers dotted around the space.  Towards the top of the town there is a big square with cafes that have open areas overlooking the land below - great place to sit and relax.

We wandered aimlessly through the streets enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and each others company whilst we explored a new place.

We loved the seats in this cafe - made out of oil cans.  So ingenious and so colourful.

Oranges growing in the middle of the town - this in itself is such a Mediterranean thing to see.  Fresh fruits growing freely.  We went past lots of orange, lemon, and olive groves as we drove around.

By now we were starving so went into a restaurant that had a lovely view (basically they all had a lovely view), but sat inside as the wind had picked up a bit.  The food was amazing and the glass of Sangria I had was just a little bit strong (my lips were numb by the time I'd finished it).

Above is a scrummy mango, avocado, and prawn salad, and below is grilled prawns and baby cuttlefish.  You'll see by the next picture that my beloved is not a huge fan of messy food - he was hoping the prawns would come to the table minus their shells.

As you can see from this picture the town is on a bit of a hill - our hire car is at the top of the picture near the big building.  There is a lift that takes you from the lower level of the town up to the top if you don't want to walk.  I was fascinated by how they had cut these trees, and this was not the only place we saw them cut like this.

This is a mobile barber that we spotted in the carpark - the pictures on the front are scissors and combs, and on the side is a barbers pole.

The beach area of Mojacar has lots of restaurants and bars along the front to take advantage of the long beach and the (usually) good weather.  We loved the paintings on this one - they were all around it with different underwater creatures.

A few more shots that include the furbies - Ken was so in his element with the four boys.  In this picture is Bombo (white with blue harness), Banjo (on Ken's knee), and Milo who's sleeping so you can't really see him.

The lovely Sammy - I've never met a more exuberant dog who takes a flying leap to greet you when he comes into the room.  He's gorgeous.

The equally gorgeous Elaine with Banjo and Milo.  Banjo, the brown and white one keeps thinking he's in charge, but I think that's a common trait of the smallest in the pack - small but fabulous.
