Top Ten Musical Memories and Friday's Fill Ins

After a wonderful break in Amsterdam I'm back at my laptop and today I'm catching up with yesterday's top ten and today's fill ins. There will be posts about our trip to come, as it is a beautiful place to visit.

I'm starting with Top Ten Thursday which is set by Tamara at Part-time Working Hockey Mom and this week we're posting the top ten songs that no matter how much time has gone by, they will always take us back to a very specific moment, place or person. There are so many songs I could have chosen, but I've managed to whittle it down to just ten and then there are some that are too personal to share the reasons behind.

1. Groove is in the Heart - Deee-Lite: a night at Bay Rock in the city I trained in, and whilst this song was playing I was dancing with a friend and the couple next to us were dancing in a way that can only be described as verging on pornographic. Understandably, the two of us didn't know whether to laugh or cringe.

2. I'll Be There - Mariah Carey: I remember listening to this song in Saudi when I first met Ken, and we were having a very serious discussion about how some songs are perfect to listen to when you're feeling miserable, almost like pressing against a tooth when you have toothache.

3. Evergreen - Will Young: One of the hardest things I've ever done is support a patient through his wedding which was being performed because he was dying - he was only in his 20's. This is the song that they had their first dance to and for years I couldn't listen to it without getting tears in my eyes.

4. Wind Beneath My Wings - Bette Midler: This song takes me back to the same wedding mentioned above, as my patient's new wife sang this to him after the ceremony - heartbreaking. I don'g think there was a dry eye in the room, and it still hurts my heart when I hear it.

5. Time to Say Goodbye - Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bocelli: When Ken and I first started seeing each other, I was still meant to be returning to Australia and had a return ticket. I was at one of those crossroads in life and had gone out and bought the single for this song as it seemed rather fitting. That night I was talking to Ken on the phone (I was in Nottingham and he was in London), and he had bought the same single that day - spooky. This song brings back those emotions that I was going through all those years ago.

6. Can't Help Lovin Dat Man - Showboat: This is one of the first musicals I ever saw live - it was a production by the local music society in Burnie and was at the Civic Centre. I fell in love with musicals and this is my favourite song from Showboat.

7. From This Moment On - Shania Twain: This is the song that we had playing in the church as we signed the marriage register - the first time I officially signed my name as Mrs Pamela Wright, the luckiest girl in the world as I'd just married my best friend and soul mate.

8. All the Young Dudes - Mott the Hoople: We were at a nurses graduation ball in Nottingham, having been invited by two students I'd gotten to know. This song came on and the next thing I knew I was being dragged onto the floor by my beloved, with him shouting "this is the anthem of my youth"!

9. Alive and Kicking - Simple Minds: When I was in Saudi I went to aerobics at least twice a week, sometimes more, which was led by a British girl Jackie. This song was part of the music mix she used, and along with several others, as soon as I hear it I feel like I should be doing certain aerobic moves even though it's twenty five years since I did that routine.

10. Canon in D - Johann Pachelbel: This is the piece of music I walked into the church to for our wedding and whenever I hear it I smile.

There you have it, ten musical memories - what songs take you back to a particular moment in your life? Before you go, make sure you hop over to Tamara's Blog and see what my fellow bloggers have come up with.
Now onto Friday's Friendly Fill Ins which are set by Annie at McGuffy's Reader and Ellen at 15andmeowing.com - why don't you come and join us. The words in purple are the prompts that are provided and then the rest is me.
1. When I am nervous, I tend to eat even though my stomach may be churning. I've never bitten my nails but I do tap my fingers or twist my hair a lot more than normal.
2. When I am angry, I get really quiet, imagine all sorts of ways to get even with the person I'm angry with, and then just move on.

3. Today, I know for sure that I am blessed to have a wonderful husband. There were several moments in the last week when I had this thought as exploring new places together is so much fun, especially when my hand is held by his.
4. For St. Patrick’s day, I try to wear green if I remember - more often than not I don't remember that it's St Patrick's day until I'm at work or out and about. It's not really a day that was celebrated in Australia when I was growing up, so it's not uppermost in my mind.
How do you react when nervous or angry? Make sure you hop over to Annie's Blog and see what my fellow bloggers have come up with for their fill ins.

Until next time, be good, stay safe, and listen to some good music this week.

  1. 2, 4, 5, 7 and 9 are among my favorites, too, even though they didn't make the list this time.
Time to Say Goodbye - so did you actually say goodbye (for now) and use your plane ticket?
From this moment on - so very fitting for the beginning of a marriage, and to what marriage if not yours do the lyrics still apply perfectly?
Bittersweet memories of the couple facing death so soon, great however, they decided to go through with it, and that you were part of it!
I love how certain songs are forever engraved in our memories, especially if they're happy ones of course!
Thanks for linking up, can't wait to read about your Amsterdam adventures!

    1. No, we didn't say goodbye and I didn't use my return ticket. In fact I didn't return to Australia until two years later for our wedding.
This was a great theme, and I did a lot of reminiscing.

  2. I love your picks of music. You and I like the same kinds of music.

I love the husband part. I did the same thing. It's wonderful to have such a wonderful mate isn't it. Yes it is.

Have a fabulous day and weekend. ♥

    1. I don''t think #8 made it outside the UK as I'd never heard it until I moved here. I'm a very lucky lady to be married to my man.
      Thanks for stopping by Ellen.

  6. Pamela,

Usually, when I'm nervous I get frigidity. I am a stress eater but not because I'm nervous, though. I'm ready to bit nails or rip someone's head off but I usually do neither. It think it's best to so restraint and breathe deeply until the anger passes. Nothing good ever comes from acting on ones emotions. That's part of people's problems today. Today I know for sure that I know very little or so it seems. There's just too many ups and downs in the world to get a real grip on what's certain. For St. Patty's Day, I wore my "Everyone Loves an Irish Girl" green t-shirt, and I prepared us a lovely Irish meal of home-made potato soup and Reuben sandwiches. Mmm, good! Of your song selections, Pachelbel is the collection I got on cassette to use while in labor with DD#1 nearly 30 years ago. :)

  7. #2 - listen to sad songs when sad, yeah, I get that. I actually prefer the michael jackson version but it's probably because I heard that one first.

#4 - I remember I think I did cry watching that movie. I loved the 'beaches' soundtrack.

    ----

#2 - that's me too when I get angry except I seem to be a little louder and damaging a few things. I don't see how you can keep quiet.

    have a lovely day.
